I love 3D, but most 3D movies are a real disappointment, especially those converted post-production. Here is my list of titles where I felt 3D enhanced the viewing experience. In reverse order, of course!

Final Destination 5

R | 92 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

50 Metascore

Death returns to claim the lucky survivors of a deadly bridge collapse in this fifth frightening installment in the series.

Director: Steven Quale | Stars: Nicholas D'Agosto, Emma Bell, Arlen Escarpeta, Miles Fisher

Votes: 111,751 | Gross: $42.59M

Horror lends itself to having things come out of the screen to assault your eyes: FD5 (and FD4) both did this rather well.

Piranha 3D

R | 88 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

53 Metascore

After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents.

Director: Alexandre Aja | Stars: Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames

Votes: 88,538 | Gross: $25.00M

I do understand that including this movie on the basis of Kelly Brook's nude underwater ballet is not very classy of me, but it's really effective in 3D. Honest.

A Christmas Carol

PG | 96 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

55 Metascore

An animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Steve Valentine

Votes: 107,755 | Gross: $137.86M

Robert Zemeckis' CGI has worrying moments (where characters almost resemble those who voice them) but the 3D can't be faulted, especially the wonderful aerial opening shot.

Step Up 3D

PG-13 | 107 min | Drama, Music, Romance

45 Metascore

A tight-knit group of New York City street dancers find themselves pitted against the world's best hip hop dancers in a high-stakes showdown.

Director: Jon M. Chu | Stars: Sharni Vinson, Rick Malambri, Adam Sevani, Alyson Stoner

Votes: 57,121 | Gross: $42.40M

Dance seems to be a genre which is very suited to 3D presentation. This one is as good as any.

Happy Feet Two

PG | 117 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

50 Metascore

Mumble's son, Erik, is struggling to realize his talents in the Emperor Penguin world. Meanwhile, Mumble and his family and friends discover a new threat their home -- one that will take everyone working together to save them.

Directors: George Miller, Gary Eck, David Peers | Stars: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Pink, Carlos Alazraqui

Votes: 43,487 | Gross: $64.01M

A film which I felt was rather better than its predecessor features some spectacular 3D work.

The Avengers

17+ | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner

Votes: 1,315,675 | Gross: $623.28M

For a post-production conversion, this is very effective, and enhances the superheroics in the sky no end.

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!

PG | 88 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

73 Metascore

Pirate Captain sets out on a mission to defeat his rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz for the Pirate of the year Award. The quest takes Captain and his crew from the shores of Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London.

Directors: Peter Lord, Jeff Newitt | Stars: Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, Martin Freeman

Votes: 46,737 | Gross: $31.05M

This Aardman animation film is entertaining in its own right, but the 3D is pretty good too.

Drive Angry

R | 104 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

44 Metascore

A vengeful father escapes from hell and chases after the men who killed his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter.

Director: Patrick Lussier | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke

Votes: 97,032 | Gross: $10.71M

A preposterous "horror" movie with eye-popping 3D. The sort of film which 3D was made for.

Monsters vs. Aliens

PG | 94 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

56 Metascore

A woman transformed into a giant after she is struck by a meteorite on her wedding day becomes part of a team of monsters sent in by the U.S. government to defeat an alien mastermind trying to take over Earth.

Directors: Rob Letterman, Conrad Vernon | Stars: Reese Witherspoon, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert, Seth Rogen

Votes: 154,588 | Gross: $198.35M

An entertaining CGI feature which makes good use of 3D.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

PG | 95 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

60 Metascore

The Madagascar animals join a struggling European circus to get back to New York, but find themselves being pursued by a psychotic animal control officer.

Directors: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, Conrad Vernon | Stars: Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer

Votes: 172,054 | Gross: $216.39M

Vast amounts of visual invention on show here, and 3D simply adds to it.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

PG | 90 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

66 Metascore

A local scientist is often regarded as a failure until he invents a machine that can make food fall from the sky. But little does he know, that things are about to take a turn for the worst.

Directors: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller | Stars: Anna Faris, Bill Hader, Bruce Campbell, James Caan

Votes: 217,906 | Gross: $124.87M

This film is a visual feast (sorry!) even without 3D, but there are some spectacular sequences which are designed for the depth provided by 3D.

Arthur Christmas

PG | 97 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

69 Metascore

Santa's clumsy son Arthur sets out on a mission with Grandsanta to give out a present they misplaced to a young girl in less than two hours.

Directors: Sarah Smith, Barry Cook | Stars: James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Hugh Laurie

Votes: 54,845 | Gross: $46.46M

Some of the 3D sequences are breathtaking.

The Adventures of Tintin

PG | 107 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

68 Metascore

Intrepid reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg

Votes: 224,192 | Gross: $77.59M

As if you couldn't guess, Spielberg has the full potential of 3D within his grasp right from the first frame.

The Great Gatsby

21 | 143 min | Drama, Romance

55 Metascore

A writer and wall street trader, Nick, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby.

Director: Baz Luhrmann | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire

Votes: 507,581 | Gross: $144.84M

Baz Luhrman uses 3D to enhance visual spectacle, perhaps inappropriately, but undeniably eye-catchingly.

Creature from the Black Lagoon

79 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

A strange prehistoric beast lurks in the depths of the Amazonian jungle. A group of scientists try to capture the animal and bring it back to civilization for study.

Director: Jack Arnold | Stars: Richard Carlson, Julie Adams, Richard Denning, Antonio Moreno

Votes: 28,959 | Gross: $1.30M

A black and white horror feature from the 50s where the live action 3D cinematography adds an amazing amount of depth. See it, and wonder why all 3D films aren't filmed like this.

Life of Pi

13+ | 127 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

79 Metascore

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

Director: Ang Lee | Stars: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain, Tabu

Votes: 603,239 | Gross: $124.99M

Visually spectacular 3D showcase, but otherwise rather empty.

Tangled

SU | 100 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

71 Metascore

The magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.

Directors: Nathan Greno, Byron Howard | Stars: Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Ron Perlman

Votes: 425,972 | Gross: $200.82M

Hugely enjoyable fairytale with knockout 3D

Avatar

17+ | 162 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

83 Metascore

A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez

Votes: 1,162,812 | Gross: $760.51M

There is no better demonstration of 3D in cinema.

Gravity

PG-13 | 91 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

96 Metascore

Two astronauts work together to survive after an accident leaves them stranded in space.

Director: Alfonso Cuarón | Stars: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris, Orto Ignatiussen

Votes: 795,481 | Gross: $274.09M

If you can manage to see this in 3D, please try to. It's a good film anyway, but 3D really enhances the sense of vastness of being in space.

Jurassic Park

16+ | 127 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

A pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough

Votes: 915,755 | Gross: $402.45M

A classic film, and a first-rate post conversion where the incredibly effective 3D adds a great deal.
